Fancy Necklace Cooking, Comparing Weight, Oviparous Animals, Awards, and Pies in the Face

Fancy Necklace Cooking
This week we learned about the letter Nn, it's sound, and how to correctly form the letter.  In our cooking lesson, we using fruit loop cereal  and string to make a fancy necklace.  We wore it all day and believe it or not…they didn't eat it!!!  I really expected the kids to go home with a plain string around their neck!!  They loved them and couldn't wait to show their parents….and then eat it!!!

Comparing Weight
In Math, we used objects to discover and explore a balance scale.  We learned what happens to the side when it weighs more and less.  We used various objects to make predictions of how many blocks it would weigh and then tested our predictions.  We learned that if we have a number on one side it will weight the same if the same number is on the other side.  We discovered that an addition problem on one side will equal the sum on the other side.  Lastly, we discovered that we could solve for a missing number (that's algebra!!) in Kindergarten!!!!

First we weighed different objects and compared them
using the words "weighs more"and "weighs less."We
talked about what happens to the scale when an objects is
heavy or light.

Then we weighed different objects using cubes to determine it's weight.

We then used numbers to determine the weight.  We learned that if it weighs the same, it is called "equal."We discovered that we can use two numbers on one side to make the other side equal.

4 cubes is equal to 2 green and 2 orange cubes

6 purples is equal to 4 yellow and 2 pinks

We then solved for a missing number.  The little "X" in the container is to represent that missing number.  We then added blocks until the containers were equal and balanced.  We counted the blocks we added to find the value of "X."  The LOVED finding the missing number!!!

Oviparous Animals
This week we concluded our study of oviparous animals (animals that hatch from eggs).  We learned about different oviparous animals and their life cycle.  We watch several Youtube videos of animals hatching.  The alligator hatching was our favorite!!

We made a book about oviparous animals.

We learned about the life cycle of a robin and we watch a Youtube video of a robin hatching.

A Pie in the Face
Two weeks ago, our school participated in Jump Rope for Heart.  Our PE teacher challenged the entire school to raise money.  She told us that the person to collect the most money would get to throw a pie in her face!!  One the friends in our class collected the most money and got to pie Mrs. Brown!!  It was great fun to watch!!

After he put it in her face, he rubbed it in, too!  That was hilarious!!!!

With is medal and "lucky ducks!"

Awards
One friend's artwork was accepted into the Cinco de Mayo art competition.  We will heard back later about the finalist.  We wish her luck!!

One friend won the caring student award.  She is always helping others!

Farmer Dress up Day, Cooking, Fractions, Oviparous Animals, Spring Egg Hunt, Snow Days

Goodness!!!  I have been terrible about updating!!  I need to get back to my normal schedule!!  I will include some picture at the bottom of each post that I missed from previous weeks.  Sorry!!

Farmer Dress Up Day
We have been studying farms.  During this study, we learned about what we get from farms, what animals are from farms, and a farmer's job.  To conclude our study, we dressed up like farmers.  It was a fun day!!

Oviparous Animals
While studying farm animals, we learn that several animals lay eggs.  We expanded this learning to find out that lots of animals lay eggs.  We learned about penguins, birds, reptiles, and two mammals that lays eggs.

Cooking
This week we have been studying the letter Qq, it's sound, how to write it, and words that contain a Qq.  For our cooking lesson, we make "Queen's Tarts" using graham crackers crumbs, vanilla pudding, and cherry pie filling.  It was yummy!!!

Fractions
In math, we have been studying fractions.  We discovered how each part of the fraction must be equal.  We discovered with words "half" and "whole."  We also learned how to make a "fair share" by dividing a set into equal parts.

Cutting a slice of cheese into equal halves.

We read The Doorbell Rang.  We used Cookie Crisp cereal to make a "fair share" of cookies.

We read Bear's Berries and used our own "berries"(Captain Crunch Berry Cereal) to make a fair share.

We read The Easter Egg and made a "fair share" of Easter Eggs.

Spring Egg Hunt

Winter Snow Fun
What do you do when it starts to snow in Texas??  You go outside!!  We enjoyed a little snow fun two times this winter while we were at school.
