Star of the Week, New Year's Resolutions, Chinese New Year, Subtraction

Star of the Week
This week our Star of the Week is a friend that loves chicken nuggets, the color pink, and wants to be a ballet teacher when she grows up.

New Year's Resolutions
We started the year by talking about traditional American New Year's celebrations.  How did you celebrate?  Then we discussed what a resolution was and made our own.  We have lots of work to do this year!!

Chinese New Year
In China, their calendar is different than ours.  We learned about their calendar system and compared it. We learned about how the Chinese celebrate their New Year.

The Chinese calendar is based on the moon.  It is called a lunar calendar.

We compared the  American New Year and the Chinese New Year.

Subtraction
In Math, we are learning about subtraction.  We are using manipulatives and drawing pictures to show how to solve subtraction problems.

We used the story Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar to practice subtraction and then recorded it in our Math Journal.

We used the story 10 Little Ducks to practice telling subtraction stories and solving them.

Just use bottom on the snowman to tell stories about a snowman who lost his buttons.

Subtraction, building words, and Santa's surprise!

This week was a busy week of learning! We spent all week building words, subtracting, and reviewing our letters.

Subtraction
This week we learned about subtraction. We read lots of books about subtraction including Benny's Pennies, 10 Little Ducks, and Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar, and 10 Little Fish. Our Favorite was Benny's Pennies... We liked practicing how to spend money. We also realized how fast money is spent! Yikes!!!

Building Words
This week we became word builders. They coined the term "Word Architects!"  We practice building the word, sounding it out, Andy akingletters away to see what was left.

Santas's Surprise
Santa left us a surprise over the break. When we returned, these little Zebra Finch (both boys) were in our class!  We named them "Fluffy" and "Sharky."  Fluffy is the bigger one and Sharky is the smaller, louder, more active one.  We are learning to care for our pets, clean their cage, and feed them.  We have learned that they do not like loud noises and that they really like to build their nest. We have enjoyed listening to them sing and watching them bathe in their water!
