Cooking, STAAR with our book buddies, Measurement, Animal characteristics, Earth Day

STAAR
In Kindergarten, we do not take the STAAR test, but our Book Buddies do!  To give them a little encouragement and good luck, we gave them little treats every day.  We KNOW they did great!!

Cooking Ravens
To celebrate the letter Rr, we made Raven cookies.  They were they yummiest birds we have ever eaten!!

Measurement
This week, we are studying non-standard measurement.  This means measuring objects using blocks, pictures, links, or anything else.

We started our learned by tracing our foot and comparing them to each other's.
We learned that some are larger, some are shorter, and some are equal.

Next we used our Kindergarten feet to measure things around the room.

We then used cubes and measured how tall we are.

With our partner, we then found things in the room that were longer than, smaller than, or equal to 10 cubes. We learned that it was very hard to find things that were equal to 10 cubes!!!

Animal characteristics
In Science, we are studying the characteristics of animals and how they are are the same or different from other animals.

We learned and wrote about Chameleons.

We compared birds and mammals and wrote about them.

We charted the characteristics of birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Earth Day
To celebrate Earth Day, we learned about how to take care of our Earth.  We wrote about what we could do and then we used that to practice it all day.  We even cared for our school by picking up trash outside!

Nature Center, Zoo Field Trip, Ladybug Release

Nature Center
This Tuesday, we had the opportunity to get on the bus and go over the the Grand Prairie Nature Center.  This experience was so great!  We got to observe, taste, test, learn, and record so much!

In the Blue Martin Station, we got to use binoculars to observe the blue martins.  They were very busy making nests for their babies.
A nest inside a blue martin house.

There are 21 martin houses.

In the weight station, we used balance scales to discover which rocks would weigh more or less.

In the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly Station, we observed insect parts and real insects inside glass.

In the Scavenger Hunt Station, we use our five senses to find different things on the list.  We love the feel of the Lambs's Ear plant.  It was so soft!!  We also tasted kale and radishes.  We smelled lavender plants.

In the Spacial Reasoning Station, we had to build a house for an animal out of blocks.  It had to have a place that the animal could keep warm, stay out of the rain, and keep their babies safe.

Zoo Field Trip
What an experience to be able to visit the zoo and see the animals that we have learned so much about. We would like the thank the PTA for paying for our trip and for our parents for being excellent chaperones!!

Ladybug Release
The district bought all of the kindergarten classes a "bubble habitat" full of ladybugs.  We enjoyed watching them and learning about them.  On Friday, we had to release the ladybugs so that they could find more food and help our school garden grow!
